Forged from Global Relationships

AboutPowellElectroSystemsIn 1971, Lew Powell founded Powell Electro Systems in his garage to manufacture custom tubing assemblies for DuPont. The global science and engineering innovator was experiencing challenges producing flexible Teflon tubing for ACA (their first-generation blood analyzer). Thanks to the resourcefulness and engineering talent of Mr. Powell, we were able to design and manufacture the critical part and forge a strong working relationship with DuPont that helped to establish us as a company.

Building on the success of this initial project and our ability to solve challenging manufacturing problems, Lew and his team quickly gained ground as a contract manufacturer, this time working with TA Instruments (another DuPont spinoff) to provide wire and cable assemblies for a thermal analysis machine they were developing. Once again, Powell was able to provide a reliable solution and build a long-term working partnership.

Throughout our early years, Powell was repeatedly asked to design and develop complex custom cable, wire and tubing solutions, stretching our expertise and capabilities to earn a reputation for problem-solving and product excellence. This valuable experience helped us to perfect our offerings and streamline our production, ensuring the long-term success of Lew's original vision.


The Next Chapter

In 1986, control of the next chapter in Powell’s story was passed to Bill Powell (Lew’s son), who had worked in nearly every aspect of the family business. His electronics and manufacturing experience, as well as his education, enabled him to maintain and improve on his father's legacy, as the company transitioned into the 21st century confident in their abilities and proud of their heritage.

In 2006, Bill purchased the business outright and brought on Andrew Harrison, an IBM and Allergan veteran, to serve as president. Together they focused on three major initiatives for Powell:

  • Upgrading the Powell facility and capabilities
  • Implementing a quality system
  • Updating operational systems

These were all accomplished quickly. In 2009, Powell Electro Systems moved from our original location to a state-of-the-art facility, where we were able to add significant new technical capabilities and equipment (including new networked computers and ERP). In addition, we were able to implement a solid quality system to ensure high standards and client satisfaction.
